Greetings from Portland, OR

We have had a very busy few weeks here, with the highlight being a visit from Maneet Chauhan on May 7 to sign copies of her book, “Flavors of My World”.  Maneet was a delight to have here – she is warm, funny, and totally engaging!  From all appearances, she and her crew enjoyed the visit as much as we did.  She signed additional copies of her book, so if you missed the event and you are looking for a great gift for yourself or someone else, pick up one of her books. A wonderful journey of foods from around the world.

Maneet with the staff of Savory Spice Shop Portland

June ushers in the time of year for all the outdoor activities we love so much – even with some cold and rain, we get out there, including, grilling and barbecuing. One of the things we love to share with customers is how versatile so many of our spice products are – you might pick up a product from our barbecue section, but not realize you will love it for making a salad dressing, potato dish or something equally as interesting and delicious.  We are going to begin highlighting a few products with ideas from our staff and customers on their favorite ways to use it.  Look for ideas throughout the store.

Don't forget that June is Wedding Season - think beyond giving dishes, towels and housewares and try a personalized Savory Spice Shop gift pack pairing that each newly-wed will enjoy.  For veteran cooks, pair a Surf & Turf gift pack with a Better Baking gift pack.  For the newly-weds just starting out, try the must-have spice cabinet necessities that you’ll find in Keys to the Cupboard. Did you know we have a Gift Registry?  Just ask!

New Savory Spice Shop Gift Packs in Time for Fathers Day
New 4 jar gift pack
If you have been in the store since May 28, you have noticed the brand new gift pack packagingThe new packaging is more transparent and highlights the wonderful colors and textures of our spices and seasonings. They are also more environmentally friendly as the new design uses less bulk packaging material. We have ‘sleeves’ that we pull over gift sets so they are essentially ‘wrapped’ and ready for gifting.  We have the same sets you have become familiar with, so not to worry.  We will continue to do the smaller 2-3 jar custom sets that make the perfect small gift for just about any occasion.

We are also introducing a new, easy way to  customize your own special gift pack called "Stack-a-Pack". With all the new 4 Jar Gift Packs, we can easily 'stack' them to make an 8 or 12 jar gift pack with all your favorite blends. Create a ‘Good Game!’ gift by stacking a Steak Lovers and Wranglin’ Rubs.  Add Chops & Bones for a ‘Grillin’ Gourmet’ 3 pack gift. We’ve got more fun ideas or create your own!

Don't forget about Dad: Our new gift packs have arrived just in time for Father's Day (June 16th).Give that special Dad in your life the gift he really wants - his favorite grillin' seasonings and rubs, and an excuse to fire up the grill!

New Local Offerings
You may also have noticed the two Oregon products we are now carrying – Blossom Vinegars and Oregon Olive Oil from Red Ridge. From Blossom Vinegars, we have chosen to carry a wide selection, which includes: Blueberry Basil, Wild Flower Honey, Lemon Dill, Thai Pepper Lime, and, “drinking” vinegars: Loganberry Beet, Ginger Apple Pear, Mango Habanero.  From Oregon Olive Oil we will have their Arbequina EVOO and the Oregon Olive Oil Trio Sampler Pack which includes 3, 50ml bottles, one each of Arbequina, Koroneiki and Tuscan EVOOs.  You have been asking for olive oil and vinegars and here they are.  The products we consider the best of Oregon and excellent complements to the Savory Spice Shop products. Going back to that wedding gift idea – Oregon Olive Oil, Blossom Vinegar, Savory Spice Shop gift pack – what could be better?  Thank you to two great Oregon companies for wanting to be part of our store.

The Portland Rose Festival
Through June 9
The festival has a variety of venues around the metropolitan area.  The Big Event is the Rose Parade on Saturday, June 8, second only to the Rose Parade in Pasadena! There are the City Center activities along the waterfront, Concerts, Childrens’ Parade, Starlight Parade (ok, my favorite), Dragon  Boat Races (we have been watching them practice for several months along the Willamette River).  There is something for everyone to love and no better way to celebrate the beauty of the Northwest.  Be sure to go to Washington Park to The International Rose Test Gardens.  Truly nothing else like it.  The Milk Carton Races will be at Westmoreland Park on Sunday, June 9 – just a mile or so from Savory Spice Shop Portland. Saturdays and Sundays, through June 9, with any purchase, receive a Savory Spice Shop Rose Festival sample pack, with 2 bags of different products representing Oregon.

Saturday, June 1 – Noon – 5 p.m.- Savory Chef Saturday:  Barbecue, Barbecue
Come in for a sample of amazing food, pick up a recipe, talk to the team members about what they have made using an array of our spices and rubs from the Barbecue section.  Always a fun day at Savory.

Sunday, June 16 – Fathers Day – Somehow it is perfect timing that Father’s Day falls right at the beginning of the outdoor grilling season.  Grilling is not limited to the guys, but over the years, our very unscientific analysis is that some men just seem to have a real comfort zone at the barbecue.  Of course you can give Dad another “something” that he won’t use, but we can guarantee that he will use Savory products, and, you can reap the delicious results created from a Savory gift.  Jumbo Barbecue, Best of BBQ, Chops & Bones, Steak Lovers – or, create a custom gift, with items you pick.  The possibilities are endless.

Wednesday, June 19 – 3-7 p.m. Look for familiar faces from Savory Spice Shop Portland at the Moreland Farmers MarketWe are taking a turn helping out with the information booth at the market and handing out sample packs of two different Savory products.  Come by and say “Hi”. Consider stopping at the market, then heading over to the store (just down the street) to pick up the perfect spices to go with your local, fresh products. Our Capitol Hill Seasoning (roasted shallots and dill) is an amazing addition to sliced tomatoes – add a splash of balsamic vinegar, a little good olive oil, sprinkle with Capitol Hill – good to go.  Or, check out the Savory Spice Shop recipe for Capitol Hill Cashews and Asparagus.

Friday, June 28 - BridgeTown Bash, a fundraiser to benefit Vital Life Foundation. The mission of Vital Life, a Marquis and Consonus Foundation, is to support organizations and programs that provide meaning and vitality in the lives of seniors and staff members living and working in long term care.  Lisa and I will be at the event, serving up popcorn with a variety of toppings and handing out spice samples.  There will be food carts, wineries and distilleries represented at the event which will be held at Pure Space in the Pearl District of Portland.  For more information, and tickets, click here
